Small kitchen from £1,800
Jeremy Thornton · Kitchen fitter · Knebworth, North Herts
I fit kitchens from all the major makers, including Howdens, Wren, Wickes, Magnet and DIY Kitchens, as well as bespoke kitchens and cabinetry. From a dry fit to a full refurbishment, I measure, quote and fit every job myself. I can also give an existing kitchen a new look with a hand-painted finish.

What I do
Some people just need the units in. Others want the whole room taken back to brick and finished. I do both, and everything in between.

Small kitchen from £1,800
Strip-out to handover, including heating, rewiring, plastering, flooring and tiling. I run the whole job and coordinate the trades, so you deal with one person.
From £7,000, depending on the room
Under-stair drawers, utility cupboards, cabin beds and garage conversions, built to fit the space exactly rather than the nearest standard size. I draw bespoke pieces in 3D first, so you see them before anything is cut.

Recent work

One kitchen, start to finish
A full refurbishment, run as one job: rising damp in the walls treated and the room replastered, all-new electrics, underfloor heating laid and the floor tiled. The walls were prepared and painted before a single unit went up, so every edge meets a finished surface.
Before, during and after
Dated oak-effect units and a tired tiled floor, replaced with Howdens grey gloss handleless units, integrated ovens, sparkle quartz worktops, a breakfast bar and marble-effect floor tiles. The floor stays protected throughout the fit.
During and after
A charcoal shaker kitchen, fitted alongside a wider refurbishment that I project-managed. Base units levelled and the peninsula built, with the worktop surfaces protected while the rest goes in. A pull-out corner unit makes the blind corner usable, and a full-height bank houses double ovens, a wine rack and larder storage.

My wife and I were looking for a skilled trades person to help us with our kitchen redesign and subsequent fitting of new worktops, sink and units including new hob and fitted ovens. After being let down by other so called trades persons in the past we were delighted when we met Jeremy.
He was very friendly and what we would call a professional in his area of expertise. He guided us along the process of designing our kitchen and saw things we would never have anticipated, and things that other less experienced designers would have either missed themselves or, as we all know, would have not bothered and cut corners, excuse the pun. He was also flexible as we had to wait for some extra side panels to arrive after a delivery went wrong, and he also sourced us professionals to fit our gas appliances.
We are so glad we found Jeremy and we were delighted with the work he did for us, and would easily recommend Jeremy to family and friends without hesitation.

Very punctual and reasonably priced. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him and happy to provide pictures to support his work.
Jeremy is one of those rare tradesmen you're truly lucky to find. He's incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and takes immense pride in his work. Every job he's done for us has been completed to an extremely high standard, the quality really speaks for itself. What sets Jeremy apart is not just his skill, but also his approach. He's clean, tidy, and respectful of your space, which makes a huge difference. He's reliable and honest. On top of being a top-class workman, Jeremy is a genuinely kind person. You can tell he cares about doing things right and making sure his clients are happy. Highly recommended, we wouldn't go to anyone else.
I am pleased to provide a reference for Jeremy, who recently completed carpentry work at my home. He demonstrated exceptional skill, professionalism and attention to detail. He met all my expectations, completed the work on time and was very clear with costings throughout the process. Jeremy was reliable and communicated well throughout the process. I highly recommend him for any carpentry work and would not hesitate to hire him again in the future.
I would thoroughly recommend Jeremy. He is reliable and always does a great job. Great communication at all times and goes above and beyond what has been agreed.
Jeremy removed for me a heavy built-in cabinet. Jeremy took extreme care not to damage surrounding walls and flooring and also took away the heavy unit and vacuumed the area, leaving all in a good state. I would recommend Jeremy's services and certainly will ask him to do any other jobs.
Amazing craftsmanship! Attention to the last detail, everything was covered and completed to perfection. Very tidy, no mess. Just got on with things and the end result was an amazing kitchen. I would highly recommend
Great service from start to finish! Professional, reliable, and excellent quality of work. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a trustworthy local builder.
Jeremy responded quickly to my post. He came over to assess the job and made useful suggestions regarding the best solution. He completed the work cleanly and efficiently and I now have a much improved storage space and three new doors. I have no hesitation in recommending him to others and I’m sure that I will use his services again.
We were very pleased with the work that Jeremy did for us. It was quite a fiddly job and he handled it skillfully and took his time to do a thorough job. I would recommend Jeremy's work.
Typical prices
Real figures from my recent jobs. Your quote is fixed once I've seen the room.
Most small to medium kitchens take 5–7 working days on site. Refurbishments take longer, and I'll tell you how long before we start.
How it works
Use the form below or WhatsApp a photo of the room or your supplier's plan.
I check walls, services and access, and talk through the layout with you.
A written, itemised price covering everything we discussed. No surprises later.
5–7 working days for most kitchens. I'll tell you which days you'll be without a sink and cooker, and plan around them.
We walk round it together. Anything that needs adjusting in the next six months, I come back for.
Also built by me
The same care, applied to awkward spaces.

Pull-out drawers and shelving built into the space under the stairs, with flush doors that close to a clean line. This one is Armin's, in Welwyn Garden City.

Cabin beds, wardrobes under sloping ceilings, utility cupboards and boiler housings built to match the room.

From stud walls and floors to the finished room: an office, a gym or a guest room that feels like part of the house.
Bespoke furniture
Designed, built and painted by me, from raw MDF to the finished piece: a four-door shaker wardrobe that fills the wall floor to ceiling. Open the right-hand pair and there's a desk that slides out on runners, shelving above and power to hand. At the end of the day, the office shuts behind the doors.
Bespoke furniture
A small bedroom with a beam, a radiator and no room for a standard bed and wardrobe. I designed one piece to do all of it: a raised bed with shaped guard rails, a chest of drawers, a cupboard and a staircase of display shelves to climb up. Every panel was cut, shaped and finished by hand, then fitted to the room.
Bespoke furniture
Made to the exact size of the alcove, wall to ceiling, so there are no dust-catching gaps. Two hanging sections with rails, cupboards above, and two deep drawers below, finished with black bar handles to suit the room.

Total refurbishment
The same Letchworth house as the Wren kitchen above, refurbished as one job. Alongside the kitchen I built a sunken seating area into the floor, with steps down, a raised hearth for the wood burner and lift-out storage under the seats, all clad in the same oak-effect finish as the floor so it reads as one piece. It sits behind a glass screen from the brick-walled kitchen.
Bespoke storage
I designed it in 3D first, so the customer could see exactly how the space would work. Then I built it: the awkward space under a staircase, turned into tall pull-out units on heavy-duty runners. Cut to the angle of the stairs, with flush white fronts that close to a clean line.
Bespoke storage
Designed in 3D first, then built into the recess: the washing machine and tumble dryer stacked one above the other, with a pull-out shelf between them for folding and baskets, and a full-height cupboard alongside. Shown in raw MDF before painting.
Houses on one Hitchin street where I've converted the garage. I didn't knock on doors. After the first one, the neighbours came and had a look.
About me
I spent 20 years running a consultancy business and working in the City. Then I decided to rebalance my life around work I genuinely love: making things properly, with my hands.
I have a first-class honours degree in product design. It taught me to listen to what you want from a room, then work out exactly how to build it, down to the last millimetre.
I live in Knebworth and do every fit myself, from the first measure to the last bead of sealant. I'm one person, so I book up a few weeks ahead. I'd rather tell you that now than let you down later.

Straight answers
Yes. I fit kitchens from all the major makers, including Howdens, Wren, Wickes, Magnet, DIY Kitchens and IKEA, as well as bespoke kitchens and cabinetry. Send me the plan and I'll price the fit.
Often, yes. If the units are solid and the layout works for you, hand-painting the doors, frames and panels gives the room a new look for far less than a new kitchen. Send me a few photos and I'll tell you honestly whether yours is a good candidate.
Yes. For bespoke storage and furniture I draw the piece in 3D first, so you can see exactly how it will look and work before anything is cut. For kitchens, I build to your supplier's design, and I'll point out anything on the plan that won't work in the room.
I fit the cabinets, worktops, doors and panels, level and ready to use, but I don't make the plumbing, gas or electrical connections. It suits you if you already have trades you trust. If you'd rather not organise them, I can bring in mine and you get a full fit instead.
Trades I've worked with for years: a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas, and a qualified electrician for wiring. I also use the same trusted plasterers, tilers and window fitters. I arrange and manage them, so you deal only with me, and you receive the certificates for their work.
Most small to medium kitchens take 5–7 working days on site. I'll tell you in advance which days you'll be without a sink and a cooker so you can plan around them.
Yes. I carry £2m public liability insurance, which covers accidental damage to your home or injury while I'm working, and £1m professional indemnity insurance for my design work. I'm happy to send you the certificates.
Call me. Snags are fixed free for six months after the fit, and I'll still pick up the phone after that.
